# VS Code, Cursor, and other editors

> Install Elf in VS Code or a compatible VS Code-based editor.

The extension provides **Overview**, **Changes**, and **Activity**. Use **Manage** for connections, pairing, notification preferences, automatic sync, and coding-assistant setup.

Install [Elf from the Visual Studio Marketplace](https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=NonsoOnah.elf-design-system). Choose the pre-release version for the current beta. The extension ID is **NonsoOnah.elf-design-system**.

Alternatively, install from your terminal:

```sh theme={null}
code --install-extension NonsoOnah.elf-design-system --pre-release
```

Reload VS Code, open a trusted local project, then select the Elf activity-bar icon and Start. For a maintainer-provided VSIX, use **Extensions → … → Install from VSIX**.

## Cursor and other compatible editors

Elf is built against the VS Code extension API. You can use its VSIX in compatible VS Code-based desktop editors such as Cursor. Other editors, including Windsurf or VSCodium, depend on their extension API version and local extension policies. This is not a claim that every editor has been tested.

For Cursor:

1. Obtain the official Elf `.vsix` from the maintainer or official release distribution.
2. Open Cursor’s **Extensions** view and choose **… → Install from VSIX** (or search for **Extensions: Install from VSIX** in the Command Palette).
3. Select the Elf VSIX, reload the editor if requested, and open a trusted local project.
4. Open the Elf activity-bar view and choose **Start**.

Cursor uses a different extension registry from Microsoft’s Marketplace, so the Microsoft listing does not guarantee Elf appears in Cursor’s search. Use the official VSIX when it is not listed; do not assume a matching name in another registry is the same publisher. See [Cursor’s extension documentation](https://prod.cursor.com/help/customization/extensions).

The current extension declares VS Code API compatibility with version 1.95 or later. Compatible editors must expose the APIs it uses. Monitoring and reviewed sync share the same runtime; AI-generated descriptions additionally depend on editor language-model support and may differ or be unavailable.

## Connect your Figma file

Install Elf Bridge using its [development manifest in Figma Desktop](https://elf-docs.riftlabs.xyz/pairing.md). This setup requires the desktop app; it is not a Community installation.

The extension bundles the shared Elf runtime. npm remains supported; you do not need to clone the repository to use a published build. Figma and Slack authorization can open a browser.

Select an individual drift to inspect that resource. Use component review actions to prepare descriptions and review supported sync changes. AI descriptions depend on a compatible editor language model being available. Review generated content before applying it.
